Government Official States Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, including transport usage to communication practices.
