Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
