Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in power within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Key plot points for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to begin their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per the DM, the warrior group is for participants who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, assaulting the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the influential clan could enable the party access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
